The Fonds pour la Recherche Fondamentale Stratégique (FRFS) funds fundamental research of excellence in strategic areas.
FRFS-WELBIO is the strategic area of life sciences of the FRFS.
The mission of FRFS-WELBIO is to support fundamental research through rigorously selected projects from universities within the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, with a view to promoting discoveries leading to industrial applications in all fields of medical, pharmaceutical and veterinary biotechnology. Through the FRFS-WELBIO, Wallonia provides significant resources over several years to very high-level researchers proposing a research project that is not only excellent from a scientific point of view, but also carries a real potential for valorisation.
The FRFS-WELBIO research project, introduced by a principal investigator (PI), is intended to be a 4-year project divided into 2 periods of 2 years.
There are 3 types of eligible costs: personnel, operation and equipment.
- Starting Grant – SGR
- Advanced Grant - AGR
- An SGR application makes it possible to request funding of maximum € 200k per year.
- An AGR application makes it possible to request funding of maximum € 350k per year.
The area dedicated to sustainable development of the FRFS is called FRFS-WISD (Walloon Institute for Sustainable Development).
The decrees define sustainable development as “a development that aims to improve the quality of human life and well-being continuously, both locally and globally, and that guarantees the ability to meet the needs of present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to satisfy theirs. Its realisation implies taking into account the rate of renewal of natural resources and the maintenance of biodiversity. It also involves continuing a transition process that mobilises societal actors and social, economic and cultural functions, with a view to ensuring optimal use of all types of intangible, human, natural and financial resources and a continuous reduction of the levy on non-renewable resources.”
- WISD research project - PDR-WISD
In the framework of a mono- or pluri-university PDR-WISD, the eligible costs are of 3 types: personnel, operation and equipment.
PDR-WISD has a duration of 2 or 4 years and makes it possible to request funding of a maximum annual average of € 125,000 over the duration of the project.
