The missions of the FNRS
The mission of the Fund for Scientific Research - FNRS is to develop fundamental scientific research within the framework of initiatives presented by researchers. It promotes the production and development of knowledge by supporting, on the one hand, individual researchers and by financing, on the other hand, research programs pursued within laboratories and services located mainly in the universities of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
Based on the sole criterion of scientific excellence, financial support from the FNRS is provided in several ways:
- temporary or permanent remuneration of individual researchers,
- funding research teams,
- participation in international networks and programs,
- allocation of scholarships and credits promoting scientific exchanges,
- awarding of scientific prizes.
The FNRS is also responsible for promoting among researchers the European research and innovation programs in which the Wallonia-Brussels Federation participates, and supporting researchers for participation in these programs.
The FNRS strategic plan
After Phare I, Phare II and Phare 20-25, the FNRS adopted its new five-year strategic plan Phare 100. It is therefore setting its sights on 2028, the year of its 100th anniversary, and is committed to mobilizing the energies and developing the synergies necessary to decisively accelerate scientific development in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. This is essential to help meet the unprecedented challenges our societies are facing.
With Phare 100, the FNRS is committed to increasing its investments in research along 4 axes, aiming to meet the needs of researchers and society, and to encourage creative, innovative, daring and competitive research.
