Financing description

The FNRS launches a new call for “Infrastructures & Large Equipments” in 2024

This is a new version of the Large Equipment call (GEQ) which supports the financing of large equipment but also research infrastructures.

The purpose of the Infrastructure & Large Equipment call is to promote and consolidate the cutting-edge infrastructure park in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation by financing the acquisition of large equipment, the establishment and development of research infrastructures as well as the upgrade of existing installations ( upgrade ).

Research infrastructure means any specialized facility that provides resources and services to the scientific community to enable cutting-edge scientific and technological research in different fields.

A research infrastructure is aimed at external users based on an access, organization and management policy with a long-term perspective.

Concretely, this refers to diverse and varied installations, including virtual ones, such as instrument platforms (ex . : analysis, imaging, sequencing platforms, observatory, etc. ), large equipment ( ex . : MRI, mass spectrometer, electron microscope, etc. ), collections or archives (ex . : collection of botanical specimens, biobank for biological material, archive of ancient texts, etc. ), computer systems (ex . : intensive computing cluster…) or even longitudinal surveys.

to this end, researchers may request equipment and operating costs ( maintenance, subcontracting, reagents, leasing, rental, etc. ) and/or staff ( technician, non-doctoral scientist and research logistician ). Requests involving only personnel or operations will be authorized.

Funding requests may amount to between €300k and €800k spread over a period of 3 or 6 years.

The call is scheduled to open in mid-May 2024 and close at the end of September. The regulations will be available when the call opens.

Applications for this new call must be pre-validated by universities based on feasibility criteria (financial, human and technical) and redundancy (existence of equipment or infrastructure already available). Please contact the research administration of your institution for details on the practical arrangements.

Applications will be evaluated according to the usual FNRS standards, namely an evaluation in two rounds (remote evaluation and meeting of a Scientific Commission).
