One Health: a holistic approach to health for humans, animals, and ecosystems

The One Health approach (“a single health”) is an integrated framework in which human, animal, and environmental health are closely interconnected. The Labo 4 program (ULiège – Qu4tre) explored this concept and what it entails: how a virus passes from animals to humans, measuring antibiotic residues that move up the food chain to our plates, monitoring the spread of viruses carried by migratory birds into Wallonia, and even imagining scientific tools capable of anticipating future epidemics.

The program featured, among others, Philippe Jacques (Agronomy), Full Professor, Principal Investigator of PDR FNRS at ULiège, and François Thoreau, FNRS Research Associate at ULiège.

One Health is also in line with the objectives of the strategic plan  Phare 100 of the FNRS.

On the international research side, the FNRS participates in the European One Health Antimicrobial Resistance Partnership (EUP OHAMR), succeeding JPIAMR (Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance), and joins 53 organizations across 30 countries to support research and innovation in the field of antimicrobial resistance with a “One-Health” approach. This European partnership aims to strengthen surveillance, diagnosis, treatments and prevention strategies in the areas of human, animal and environmental health.

The FNRS participates as a funding agency in EUP OHAMR's annual transnational calls for projects through its PINT-MULTI instrument according to the usual modalities.

A first call for projects within the framework of EUP OHAMR was launched in November 2025, with the theme “ Treatments and Adherence to Treatment protocols "

The evaluation and selection process of the submitted proposals is ongoing, and the funded projects are expected to begin during 2027.

The second EUP OHAMR call for projects, in which the FNRS should participate, will be launched at the end of 2026.
