The Scientific Research Fund - FNRS has created the F.R.S.-FNRS Doctoral Schools Commission, made up of 8 members from the universities of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.

The Commission's mission is:

  • To propose to the Government the creation of doctoral schools at the F.R.S.-FNRS and to monitor their activities,
  • To approve thematic doctoral schools and monitor their activities,
  • To particularly ensure that research teams who request it and are able to justify it are associated with a thematic doctoral school.

Generally speaking, the commission assists the FNRS in the promotion and financing of doctoral schools and thematic doctoral schools. 
The commission transmits its proposals to the FNRS Board of Directors. 
The members of the commission have a mandate of 5 years, renewable.

Organic regulations of the ED commission

Art. 1 The F.R.S.-FNRS Doctoral Schools Commission is made up of two members per complete university institution and one member per incomplete university institution. The mandate of members of the Commission is five years, renewable once.

Art. 2 at the end of the mandates, the Board of Directors of the F.R.S.-FNRS, after having obtained the opinion of the Rectors, designates the personalities called to compose the Commission. The same procedure is followed if a vacancy needs to be filled.

Art. 3 The Board of Directors of the F.R.S.-FNRS elects the President of the Commission; this elects two Vice-Presidents from among its members.

Art. 4 The Secretary General convenes the meetings and provides the secretariat of the Commission.

Art. 5 The Commission draws up its opinions according to the so-called “consensus” procedure; If this procedure cannot succeed, a vote is held in which all members participate. In the event of a tie, the President's vote is decisive.

Art. 6 The Commission's missions are:

  • to propose to the Government the creation of doctoral schools near the F.R.S.-FNRS (EDs) and to monitor their activities;
  • to approve thematic doctoral schools (EDTs) and monitor their activities;
  • to particularly ensure that research teams who request it and are able to justify it are associated with a thematic doctoral school (EDTs).

Generally speaking, the Commission assists the F.R.S.-FNRS in the promotion and financing of Doctoral Schools and Thematic Doctoral Schools.

Art. 7 The Commission transmits its proposals to the Board of Directors of the F.R.S.-FNRS.

Art. 8 The Commission meets at least twice a year. The May and November meetings are devoted to examining applications for approval from thematic doctoral schools (EDTs).

Art. 9 Any dispute that may arise in the context of the creation of a thematic doctoral school (EDT) is subject to arbitration by the Commission of Doctoral Schools of the F.R.S.-FNRS.
