Creation of a new doctoral school

The Wallonia-Brussels Federation has established and recognizes 22 doctoral schools near the F.R.S.-FNRS (ED), one per field of study or set of fields of study. Their mission is to welcome, coordinate and promote thematic doctoral schools and to stimulate their creation.

A thematic doctoral school (EDT) is part of one or more doctoral schools near the F.R.S.-FNRS. There may be coincidence between ED and EDT, and the development of interuniversity, interdisciplinary and international thematic doctoral schools is encouraged. Each EDT is placed under the responsibility of a scientific committee.

The creation of new thematic doctoral schools depends on the Commission of doctoral schools of the F.R.S.-FNRS. A school is created for a period of 5 years, at the end of which it is re-evaluated.

Procedure for creating a thematic doctoral school
  • Creation of the file by the partner teams, and appointment of a spokesperson,
  • Opinion of the Research Council(s) concerned, and in the event of collaboration between research institutions outside the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, the agreement of their attached organizations,
  • Transmission to the F.R.S.-FNRS by the Rector(s) concerned of the file and the opinion,
  • Opinion of the Scientific Council(s) of the associated doctoral school(s).

Creative projects are examined by the F.R.S.-FNRS Doctoral School Commission. This requests the opinion of the scientific council of the associated doctoral school(s). It may also request the opinion of the competent FNRS Scientific Commission(s), as well as the opinion of any other expert.

Recognition of a thematic school within one or more FNRS doctoral schools is granted for 5 years. During the fifth year, a report relating to the activities and results of the five-year period is drawn up for the F.R.S.-FNRS. It accompanies, where applicable, the renewal request. This specifies and justifies any possible modifications proposed by the scientific committee of the thematic doctoral school.
