Ouverture de l'appel du Prix Centre d'études Princesse Joséphine-Charlotte 2025

The Fund for Scientific Research-FNRS and the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO) will grant, in 2025, the Prize of the Centre d'études Princesse Joséphine-Charlotte for scientific research against viral infections.

Main features of the Prize

The Prize rewards a scientific research achievement in the field of viral infections, in connection with health.
Amount: 12.500 € for personal use.
The Prize can reward a scientific research performed by a team. In this case, the Prize money will be divided equally between each member of the team.

Eligible applicants

Candidates must be of at least postdoctoral level.
Candidates must be affiliated, at the submission deadline, to a university of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, a university of the Flemish Community, or a Federal or Regional Research Center active in biomedical research.

Deadline of the call: March 10, 2025
Panel meeting: May/June 2025

Opening of the Antonella Karlson Award 2025 call

Every two years since 2011, the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique-FNRS grants the Antonella Karlson Award in memory of Antonella Karlson, a Bulgarian-born physicist living in Belgium.

Antonella Karlson Award 2025

Rewards a doctoral thesis in Physics and/or Mathematics.
Amount: 5.000 € for personal use.

Eligible candidates

The doctoral thesis must have been publicly defended between 1 January 2023 and 31 December 2024 in a University of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation or at the Royal Military Academy.
The thesis may not have been previously rewarded, except by an honorary Award.

Opening of the McKinsey & Company Scientific Award 2025 call

Thanks to the patronage of McKinsey & Company, the FNRS will grant, in 2025, the McKinsey & Company Scientific Award to a researcher who can demonstrate the societal and economic relevance OR the practical applicability of his/her doctoral thesis.

McKinsey & Company Scientific Award 2025

The doctoral thesis must pertain to one of the following fields:

Exact sciences
Applied sciences
Social, economic or management sciences
Biomedical sciences

Amount: 5.000 € for personal use.

Eligible candidates

The PhD thesis must have been publicly defended in 2024 in a university of the Federation Wallonia-Brussels or the Royal Military Academy.
Candidates must be affiliated to a recognized university (within or outside the Federation Wallonia-Brussels) at the deadline of the call (cf. below).
The thesis may not have been previously rewarded, except by an honorary Award.
McKinsey & Company staff are not eligible to the Award.

McKinsey

Opening of the Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Award (EDMA) 2025 call

Thanks to the generous patronage of a private donator, the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique (F.R.S.-FNRS) and the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) will grant in 2025 an Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Award.

EDMA 2025

Rewards a particularly deserving researcher for an original fundamental or translational contribution in the fields of Endocrinology, Diabetes, Metabolism or Nutrition.
The research can be based on any model or experimental approach (functional, morphological, genetic, pharmacological, epidemiological) but cannot pertain to cancerous pathologies.
The Award amounts to 30.000€. Half of this amount will be allocated to the laureate personally; the other half will be attributed to the laureate's laboratory.
Joint application are not allowed.

Eligible candidates

Be affiliated to a Belgian university or university hospital and currently conduct a research project in the field of the Award.
Hold a PhD in a medical or biomedical field.
Have a scientific seniority of minimum PhD +6 years and maximum PhD +16 years at the deadline of the call.
Have worked in a medical/biomedical context in Belgium at least 5 years in total, including the 3 years directly preceding the deadline of the call.
Not have received an Award of an amount equal or superior to 20.000€ for the work submitted in the last 3 years (prior to the deadline of the call).
Previous laureates of the Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Award are not eligible.

Spéciale CERN 70 ans : confidences d’un physicien

Alors que la Belgique célèbre cette semaine les 70 ans du CERN, l’émission « Les visages de la recherche » sur LN24 met en lumière les recherches menées au sein de l’Organisation européenne de recherche nucléaire et la contribution des chercheurs et chercheuses belges à cet immense laboratoire européen de physique des particules.

Andrea Giammanco est Directeur de recherches FNRS en physique à l’UCLouvain. Il explique comment il est passé de la physique théorique à la physique fondamentale, comment il a appris à travailler en équipe et avec les différents acteurs de la société. Il collabore avec le CERN depuis de nombreuses années et travaille désormais sur le transfert de technologies et les applications sociétales des recherches menées au CERN (climatologie, patrimoine archéologique ou bien encore vulcanologie).

Andrea Giammanco confie aussi à Pascal Vrebos, qu’adolescent déjà, il voulait découvrir le 6ème quark (particule élémentaire), parle de la sérendipité dans la recherche et estime que le CERN est un modèle de collaboration internationale.

Les "Visages de la recherche" constituent une nouvelle série d’émissions présentées par Pascal Vrebos sur LN24. Des chercheuses et chercheurs financés par le FNRS se confient sur leur parcours, leurs recherches, leur passion, leur manière de travailler, leurs difficultés aussi.
