Pre-announcement: call for FWB - Quebec Collaborative Research Programme to open soon

Following the success of the first three editions in 2016, 2018 and 2021, the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and Quebec are relaunching their collaborative research programme. A 4th call for proposals will be opened on 26 July 2024 by the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique (FNRS) and the Fonds de Recherche du Québec (FRQ).

Description of the programme

- The main objective of this programme is to promote the advancement of research through cross-sectoral and international collaborations.
- A maximum of 6 joint research projects will be funded.
- The amount of the grant is as follows:

  • FNRS: up to a maximum of €82,500 / year over 3 years
  • FRQ: up to a maximum of $100,000 CAD / year over 3 years

Eligibility criteria

- Teams must be made up of a minimum of 3 people, i.e. 1 promoter from the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, 1 principal investigator from Quebec and 1 co-investigator from Quebec.
- This call for proposals is open to university researchers, clinical researchers, college researchers and other research professionals.
- Quebec teams must be made up of people whose areas of research and expertise cover at least two of the research sectors covered by the FRQ: natural sciences, mathematics and engineering (NSE), social sciences and humanities, arts and literature (SSHAL), and life and health sciences.

 

Deadlines

- Pre-proposals: 25 September 2024, 14:00 (Brussels) and 16:00 (Montreal)
Eligible pre-proposals will be evaluated by a joint peer review committee. Only teams whose pre-proposals are ranked in the top 25 will be invited to submit a proposal.

- Proposals: 18 February 2025, 14:00 (Brussels) and 16:00 (Montreal) *By invitation only*

Submission of applications

- All documents must be submitted on the project submission platform (e-space) of the FNRS (the Fund managing the call) by the project promoter from the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles.
- An FRQnet administrative form accessible under the Health sector portfolio will also be required for teams from Quebec.

The Audacious Medical Grant (AMG) – Neuro 2024 call is open

The FNRS is launching call "Audacious Medical Grant" in the field of neurosciences. This funding is made possible thanks to a private Patronage.

Features of the funding instrument

  • The AMG-Neuro funding is intended for a single, eligible candidate from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation to run a medical or biomedical research project that is original and audacious, but which cannot be supported via traditional funding channels due to the lack of preliminary data, the absence of previous work or an unusual methodology (inter-university projects will not be supported under this AMG-Neuro 2024 call).
  • Funding duration: 24 months maximum.
  • Funding amount: 120.000 euros maximum.
  • Eligible costs: personnel, operating, equipment (transfer will be allowed between cost categories during the project).

Scientific scope

  • The 2024 AMG-Neuro call focuses on neurosciences : nervous system development, homeostasis and ageing, nervous system function and dysfunction, systems neuroscience and modelling, biological basis of cognitive processes and of behaviour, neurological and mental disorders.
  • All approaches are eligible (biomedical research, clinical research, translational research, epidemiological research, public health, modelling, etc.).
  • The project submitted must allow:
    • a better understanding of the nervous system and its pathologies,
    • and/or the development of new therapeutic approaches,
    • and/or an improvement in the prevention or detection of nervous system pathologies

Eligibility criteria

The candidate must be affiliated to a university of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and meet the standard eligibility requirements of the PDR instrument

Call timeline

  • Opening of the call: Monday 10th June 2024
  • Deadline of the call: Monday 15th July 2024 at 14.00 CET
  • Deadline for the Rector's validation: Tuesday 16th July 2024 at 14.00 CET
  • Scientific Commission's meeting: October/November 2024
  • FNRS Board of Trustee's meeting: December 2024
  • Start of the projects: 1st January 2025

Projects must be submitted electronically using the web-based application of the FNRS e-space (section: “Submit a new application”). The number of applications that can be submitted by a given candidate is limited to one for the 2024 edition.

Opening of the call for Infrastructure & Large Equipment 2024

An INFRA-GEQ application allows you to apply for funding for the acquisition of major specialist equipment, the setting up of research infrastructures or the upgrading of existing facilities. Funding of between €300,000 and a maximum of €800,000 can be requested, to be spread over a period of 3 or 6 years, to cover expenditure on equipment as well as certain personnel and operating costs.
