Openin of the Nokia Bell Scientific Award call 2025

The Fund for Scientific Research-FNRS and the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO) will grant, in 2025, the Nokia Bell Scientific Award in recognition of an outstanding PhD thesis that brings the most original contribution in the field of Information and Communication Technologies.

Eligible topics:

  • Artificial/augmented intelligence
  • Artificial Intelligence assisted software development
  • Big data and analytics
  • Decentralized/Trustless Software Systems
  • Edge and cloud computing
  • Fixed and wireless communication
  • Optical communication
  • Signal processing
  • Software engineering for cyber-physical systems

Amount: 8.000 € for personal use.

Eligible candidates

  • The PhD thesis must have been publicly defended between 1st January 2024 and 31st December 2024 in a Belgian university or the Royal Military Academy.
  • Candidates must be affiliated to a university or research institute (worldwide) in a research position at the submission deadline (March 17, 2025).
  • The PhD thesis may have been partially or entirely conducted in collaboration with Nokia Bell and its subsidiaries.
  • Employees from Nokia Bell and its subsidiaries are not eligible for the Award.

  • Panel meeting: June 2025

Opening of the call for applications for the Princess Joséphine-Charlotte Study Centre 2025 Prize

The Fund for Scientific Research-FNRS and the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO) will grant, in 2025, the Prize of the Centre d'études Princesse Joséphine-Charlotte for scientific research against viral infections. 

Main features of the Prize

  • The Prize rewards a scientific research achievement in the field of viral infections, in connection with health.
  • Amount: 12.500 € for personal use.
  • The Prize can reward a scientific research performed by a team. In this case, the Prize money will be divided equally between each member of the team.

Eligible applicants

  • Candidates must be of at least postdoctoral level.
  • Candidates must be affiliated, at the submission deadline, to a university of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, a university of the Flemish Community, or a Federal or Regional Research Center active in biomedical research.

Call timeline

  • Opening of the call: December 4, 2024
  • Deadline of the call: March 10, 2025
  • Panel meeting: May/June 2025

2 ERC Consolidator Grants for Géraldine Laloux and Viktoria Von Hoffmann

 

Out of 2,313 applicants, the ERC has selected 328 researchers for this year's Consolidator Grants. 2 of them are permanent FNRS researchers.

🔹 Géraldine Laloux, FNRS Research Associate at de Duve Institute, UCLouvain
➡ Funded project: VAMPIRE: Connecting prey attacks and cell cycle switches in predatory bacteria
This is her second project funded by the ERC. She is Principal Investigator of the PREDATOR project, which is funded by an ERC Starting Grant 2018.

🔹 Viktoria Von Hoffmann, FNRS Research Associate in the Department of Historical Sciences at ULiège

Opening of the Antonella Karlson Award 2025 call

Every two years since 2011, the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique-FNRS grants the Antonella Karlson Award in memory of Antonella Karlson, a Bulgarian-born physicist living in Belgium.

Antonella Karlson Award 2025

  • Rewards a doctoral thesis in Physics and/or Mathematics.
  • Amount: 5.000 € for personal use.

 Eligible candidates

  • The doctoral thesis must have been publicly defended between 1 January 2023 and 31 December 2024 in a University of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation or at the Royal Military Academy.
  • The thesis may not have been previously rewarded, except by an honorary Award.

Opening of the McKinsey & Company Scientific Award 2025 call

Thanks to the patronage of McKinsey & Company, the FNRS will grant, in 2025, the McKinsey & Company Scientific Award to a researcher who can demonstrate the societal and economic relevance OR the practical applicability of his/her doctoral thesis.

 

McKinsey & Company Scientific Award 2025

The doctoral thesis must pertain to one of the following fields:

  • Exact sciences
  • Applied sciences
  • Social, economic or management sciences
  • Biomedical sciences

Amount: 5.000 € for personal use.

Eligible candidates

  • The PhD thesis must have been publicly defended in 2024 in a university of the Federation Wallonia-Brussels or the Royal Military Academy.
  • Candidates must be affiliated to a recognized university (within or outside the Federation Wallonia-Brussels) at the deadline of the call (cf. below).
  • The thesis may not have been previously rewarded, except by an honorary Award.
  • McKinsey & Company staff are not eligible to the Award.
