The Fund for Scientific Research-FNRS and the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO) will grant, in 2024, the Nokia Bell Scientific Award in recognition of an outstanding PhD thesis that brings the most original contribution in the field of information and communication technologies.

Nokia Bell Scientific Award 2024

Eligible topics:

• Artificial/augmented intelligence
• Artificial Intelligence assisted software development
• Big data and analytics
• Decentralized/Trustless Software
• Systems Edge and cloud computing F
• ixed and wireless communication
• Optical communication
• Signal processing
• Software engineering for cyber-physical systems 

Amount: 8.000 € for personal use (Nokia has no responsibility for any usage of the Award).

Eligible candidates

• The PhD thesis must have been publicly defended between 1st January 2023 and 31st December 2023 in a Belgian university or the Royal Military Academy.
• Candidates must be affiliated to a university or research institute (worldwide) in a research position at the submission deadline (March 11, 2024). ​
• The PhD thesis may have been partially or entirely conducted in collaboration with Nokia Bell and its subsidiaries. ​
• Employees from Nokia Bell and its subsidiaries are not eligible for the Award.

Thanks to the patronage of McKinsey & Company, the FNRS will grant, in 2024, the McKinsey & Company Scientific Award to a researcher who can demonstrate the societal and economic relevance OR the practical applicability of his/her doctoral thesis. 

The doctoral thesis must pertain to one of the following fields:

• Exact sciences
• Applied sciences
• Social, economic or management sciences
• Biomedical sciences

Amount: 5.000 € for personal use.

The thesis must have been publicly defended in 2023 in a university of the Federation Wallonia-Brussels or the Royal Military Academy. Candidates must be affiliated to a recognized university (within or outside the Federation Wallonia-Brussels) at the deadline of the call (cf. below). The thesis may not have been previously rewarded, except by an honorary Award. 

McKinsey & Company staff are not eligible to the Award.

Call timeline:

• Deadline of the call: March 4th, 2024 at 2PM (Brussels time)
• Jury meeting: Spring 2024

Eugène Yourassowsky Award 2024

• Rewards a PhD thesis that presents an original contribution in the field of medical microbiology and infectious diseases.​
• Amount: 15.000 €. Half of the amount is awarded to the laureate for personal use, the other half is allocated to the laureate's laboratory in the Federation Wallonia-Brussels where the PhD thesis was conducted.

Eligible candidates

• The PhD thesis must have been publicly defended between 1^st January 2020 and 31^st December 2023 in a university of the Federation Wallonia-Brussels.
• The PhD thesis may not have been previously rewarded, except by an honorary Award.
