On December 15th opening of the first “WEL-T Investigator Programme” call

The FRFS-FNRS and the WEL Research Institute a.s.b.l. announce the opening on December 15th of the first “WEL-T Investigator Programme” call, funded by the Walloon region, for strategic research of excellence in engineering, chemistry and physics with a view to developing breakthrough innovations for industrial applications aimed at sustainable transition

This programme is open to researchers from the universities of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation who are

  • either established (Advanced grants, max. €350,000/year)
  • or at the beginning of their career (Starting grants, max. €200,000/year).

An information webinar is organised on December 9th, 2022 at 12 PM

(link to register: click here).

Context of the call:

WEL-T (Walloon ExceLlence in Technology) is a strategic axis of the FRFS (Fonds de la Recherche Fondamentale Stratégique, specialized fund of the FNRS) and a department of the WEL Research Institute. Through the “WEL-T Investigator Programme” call, Wallonia grants significant resources over several years to WEL-T Investigators in support to ambitious research programmes that pave the road to new scientific breakthroughs. These programmes constitute a pillar of the WEL-T Investigators' laboratory and are flexible, allowing adaptation of the research scope over time as needed. WEL-T Investigators must demonstrate a combination of scientific excellence, an awareness of unmet sustainable transition needs in their field, and a willingness to seek opportunities for application of their discoveries.

Ukraine: Suspension of the 2-month deadline to introduce "Bourse de séjour scientifique" applications

In the framework of the research activities funded by the FNRS or one of its associated Funds, the "Bourse de séjour scientifique - BSS" instrument makes it possible to invite foreign researchers an FWB academic institution or to researchers from FWB academic institutions to complete a scientific stay abroad. These grants are for a period of one to three months (renewable twice) and cover the living expenses of both FWB researchers and visiting researchers at a rate of €1,300 per month.

In the current context of the war in Ukraine, the usual deadline of 2 months before the starting date of the grant for the submission of files will be suspended.

This measure mainly concerns researchers who are Ukrainian nationals and their family members whose main residence was in Ukraine before 24 February 2022.[1]

Details and procedure here.

[1] As well as stateless persons and third-country nationals other than Ukraine, who have benefited from international protection or equivalent national protection in Ukraine and their family members whose main residence was in Ukraine before 24 February 2022. These categories are those of "Researchers benefiting from a "temporary protection" measure” (formalized by European Directive 2001/55/EC).

Ukraine: possible personnel hiring via transfers between cost categories

In the context of the war in Ukraine, the FNRS authorizes, within the framework of a project financed by the FNRS and if the overall envelope allows it, the transfer between categories of costs, in order to allow the previously unplanned hiring of personnel.
