From 2022 onwards, new opportunities for cooperation with the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (Germany) and the FWO (Research Foundation Flanders) will be offered to French-speaking Belgian researchers within the European initiative Weave "Research Funding Without Borders". This initiative, of which the FNRS is a founding member, brings together several European research funding agencies that have decided to open their project funding instruments to each other.

Researchers from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, who could already apply to the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) and the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), will therefore be able to apply to the FWO and the DFG with a consortium of up to three Weave partners from 2022. Similarly, it will be possible to form bi- or trilateral proposals with DFG, FNR, FWO and SNSF in the next F.R.S.-FNRS PDR call in 2022.

What is Weave and why are various European funders joining this initiative? How can Weave facilitate scientific collaboration between researchers from the French Community and Flanders? What other bi- and trilateral opportunities are available to Belgian researchers under Weave? What are the conditions, procedures and deadlines?

During this session, the cooperation opportunities for Belgian researchers within Weave will be presented. This presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session. Through the FRFS-WELBIO, Wallonia grants significant means over several years to WELBIO Investigators to enable them to develop ambitious research programs and thus achieve new scientific breakthroughs.

These programs represent a pillar of the WELBIO Investigators' laboratory and are flexible to allow them to adapt the orientation of their work if necessary.

WELBIO Investigators must demonstrate scientific excellence, knowledge of the medical and technological needs in their field, and a willingness to seek opportunities for application of their discoveries.

Timeline:

• Call opening: October 12, 2021
• Closing of the call: November 25, 2021
• Project evaluation stages: December 2021 - March 2022
• FRFS Board of Directors: April 2022
• Start of projects: June 1, 2022

Call Instruments:

The FRFS-WELBIO call allows to apply for funding via 2 instruments:

• Starting: allows to apply for a funding of 200 k€ per year maximum
• Advanced: allows to apply for a maximum of 350 k€ per year

The FRFS-WELBIO research programs are for 4 years. They are renewable every 4 years on the positive opinion of the Scientific Commission.

Each 4 years program is agreed in 2 periods of 2 years of financing. The renewal after the first two years is administrative.

On October 4, 2021, in the presence of H.M. the King, a ceremony was held at Bozar to award the 2020 Quinquennial Prizes.

• The Prize in Clinical Biomedical Sciences (Joseph Maisin Scientific Prize) was awarded to Patrizio Lancellotti, Professor at the University of Liège and Director of the Cardiology Department of the University Hospital of Liège, for his major contribution in the field of valvular heart diseases.
• The Prize in Basic Biomedical Sciences (Joseph Maisin Scientific Prize) was awarded to Jean-François Collet, Professor at the UCLouvain - Université catholique de Louvain and co-Director of the de Duve Institute, who has uncovered new fundamental cellular mechanisms.
• The Prize in Humanities and Social Sciences (Ernest-John Solvay Scientific Prize) was awarded to Vassilis Saroglou, Professor at the Institute of Psychology of the UCLouvain - Université catholique de Louvain, for his bold and innovative work in the field of the psychology of religions.
• The Prize in Applied Exact Sciences (Dr. A. De Leeuw-Damry-Bourlart Prize) was awarded to Jean-Christophe Charlier, Professor at the Polytechnic of the UCLouvain - Université catholique de Louvain, for his founding work on graphene.
• The Prize in Fundamental Exact Sciences (Dr. A. De Leeuw-Damry-Bourlart Prize) was awarded to Véronique Dehant, Head of Department at the Royal Observatory of Belgium and Professor Extraordinary at the UCLouvain - Université catholique de Louvain, whose discoveries have favored numerous space missions.
